August 30, 2015 (Vachery Estate, Cranleigh, UK)

A solid, down pour of rain the night prior left the trails muddy and slick. The day, however, was perfect for racing with cool temps and not a drop of rain.  The atmosphere was teeming with excitement as the build-up to the race heralded the Caveman’s last XTERRA, commanding the attention of the local and worldwide off-road community all at once.

Richard Stannard exited Vachery Pond first with the fastest 1.5km swim followed by Ben Allen in 17:41 and Stoltz more than one-minute back in 18:54 and Ruzafa almost two minutes behind at 19:35.

Allen moved past Stannard early on the bike to take the lead and Stoltz said “it took him ages” to catch him.  He eventually did, and Ruzafa ultimately did what he does best and moved into the front on the second lap of the bike but couldn’t shake Stoltz.

The tight action made for marvelous, best in the business spectating, with viewpoints in literally dozens of places around the iconic XTERRA England tree to watch it all unfold.  Ruzafa and Stoltz came into T2 practically together and then it was a foot race.

Behind Ruzafa and Stoltz, Ben Allen was posting the fastest run split of the day and closed the gap considerably.

“I was 30 seconds too slow,” said Allen.  “I’m a bit disappointed, but that’ll be my goal working towards Maui.  I couldn’t have done anything more.  The conditions out there were treacherous for everybody and I crashed four or five times, it was like skating on ice.  It was pretty gnarly out on the bike.  I had cross tires, not mud tires, made it hard on myself but just gave it my all.  I let two minutes go, but it gives me a good indication on what I need to do in Maui.   I thoroughly enjoyed it though and I love being here.  We got hometown support from Jacqui’s family that was great.  Coming in and out of the forest and seeing the spectators cheering you on, and all the crashes, it was spectacular.  Such a fun event.”

Thank you so much to all my family, friends, coach and sponsors! You inspire me to work hard everyday to do my very best.

I can’t thank you enough for your kindness and support. We are so close I can almost taste it….

XTERRA European Championsip (Cranleigh, England)

Ben & Jacqui enjoying the English countryside…

Sunday’s XTERRA European Championship is held in conjunction with XTERRA England.

The main event combines a 1.5-kilometer swim with a 30km mountain bike and 10km trail run. It starts with a swim in the strictly private and extraordinarily clean spring fed Vachery Pond. The bike course has riders twisting in-and-out and up-and-down the dense tree-lined forests. The run is just as fun, crossing over creeks, hopping over logs.

Allen explains, “The course is all natural, freshly carved, lots of turns, twists, roots, whoops, humps and logs.

“The run course is really cool. There’s this big ditch you have to jump across, there’s a bog that you have to run through and try not lose your shoes, you have to jump over a huge tree. It’s not just running, it’s a traditional (fell) cross country run.

Good event. Fun people. Woodstock atmosphere. The British crowd really gets into it!
Reigning Xterra World Champ Ruben Ruzafa is on the start line along with legend of the sport Conrad Stoltz. These two guys are going to make it one hell of a race and I am very excited to be in contention to ruffle a few feathers…

Race starts 12noon on Sunday 30th August.

ALLEN WIN’S XTERRA GERMANY

2015 Xterra Germany Champion

August 15, 2015 (Zittau, Germany) – Ben Allen of Australia captured the 13th edition of the XTERRA Germany Championship in Zittau today.

It’s the second week in a row Ben has been on the top step. Last week he won the XTERRA Czech Championship.
The race came down to an epic stride-for-stride battle between Allen and Bradley Weiss from South Africa. Here is how Allen explained it…
“Rough swim for me this time round. I exited fourth behind Christian Otto, Jens Roth & Roger Serrano. I’m normally the one being chased, but this time I was doing the chasing. I caught Roger on the first long climb in the forest and then a couple of minutes later Otto. Roth was further away setting a solid pace. Francois (Carloni) caught me at the top of the long climb and we worked together to hunt down Roth.
Before reaching Roth, Brad (Weiss) joined our pursuit and the three of us managed to drop Roth on the last steep climb. Me, Francois & Weiss came into T2 altogether but I managed to have a speedy transition and exit first just ahead of the other guys. Brad ran up alongside me and we ran shoulder to shoulder, breathing down each other’s necks, nether one of us giving each other an inch! Brad surged a couple of times and I surged a couple each times, neither of us wanted to say die!
It was like Mark Allen and Dave Scott battling it out in Kona! Brad put in one last surge about 1km from the finish line on the flat section and I was able to respond, before I attacked on the last hill with 500m to go and the elastic band broke for Brad.
It was a race neither of us will forget for a long time, both laying it on the line and giving 100%. It was an epic battle and although I was first across the line.
I believe after that race we are both worthy winners! Let’s do it again sometime Brad, pleasure going toe to toe with you!”

XTERRA Germany World Cup preview

Benny enjoying the German hillside…

Stop No. 10 on the XTERRA European Tour takes me to Zittau for the XTERRA Germany World Cup race on Saturday.

The usual line up of European athletes are racing tomorrow, with a few newbies toeing the start line. The German course is set in a beautiful location.
If you could have a beach in the middle of no where then Zittau has the perfect set up! Hundreds of locals get naked and embrace the warm German sun to cool off in the blistering summer heat.
It’s not uncommon to burn your eyes on naked buns whilst pre riding/running the course!!!
Long steep climbs and rocky technical descents are what athletes are faced with on the bike course. The run is fast and you zig-zag up and down an embankment.
Going to be a tough battle with conditions forecast to be HOT.! Just the way this Aussie likes it…
Race starts 15th August Saturday 11:30am, Zittau Germany…

Allen WINS XTERRA Czech World Cup

9 August, 2015/in Triathlon /
(Prachatice, Czech Republic) – Ben Allen of Australia captured the 13th edition of the XTERRA Czech Championship on a hot afternoon in Prachatice.

Allen’s victory marks his third XTERRA World Tour win this season (16th lifetime) but his first victory in the Czech Republic after five tries.“I’ve raced here many times before, and have always dreamed to take the win,” said Allen, who was making his first appearance on the XTERRA European Tour this season. “I’m so stoked to have accomplished that dream today. It wouldn’t have been possible without the love and support of my team.”
Allen exited out of the 1.5km swim with Roger Serrano (Spain) until Ben finally broke free on the 2nd lap of the bike leg going up the first technical climb.
“Ben pulled me a bit and I forgot where I was” said the soaking wet Serrano. “I got to the steep part and was in the wrong gear and had to unclip and run the bike. After that I never saw him.”
Allen continued to hammer the bike having the fastest time by more than one-minute. He led by nearly three-minutes coming into T2 and ran a smart two, tough laps.
“Great to be back on the Euro Tour again,” said Allen after the race. “Spending some time away has left me hungry to come back!
Roger and I exited the water with a handy lead and we worked together on the bike for 12km before Roger faded and wasn’t able to stay with me. I know the bike course in Czech extremely well having raced here five times before. It’s not easy and if you red line on any of the climbs you will pay for it later in the race. I rode within myself and really enjoyed the race. Loads of the locals came out to support all the athletes on a very hot and humid day!
The course in Czech is extremely challenging, steep climbs, rocky descents and encompasses the Czech culture riding/running in and out of the town square. Michal (Pilousek) and his team do an amazing job creating a fun filled weekend for all the participants. The food and beer is cheap and you will always walk away, never forgetting your Czech adventure!”
Ben as always wants to thank his family, friends & sponsors for there support.
“Thank you to my team for believing in me, more to come.
