“I’ve never encounter an active volcano before and it’s going to add a bit of extra excitement to the race. I love racing in the Philippines & look forward to Sunday when all the action kicks off”

Benny Allen starts his 2015 racing season this Sunday 7am on the Filipino Island of Albay…

Race Day

Ben and Mauricio were first out of the water. Weiss came out of the swim at fourth spot, trailing Allen and Mauricio by at least 30 seconds. But he made up for lost ground by expertly navigating the single loop point to point bike race that passed through fire roads, grasslands, sands and rocky trails to boost his bid in the event.

“I knew the winner will end up first in the bike so I had to commit to riding as hard and as aggressive as I can. I kept telling myself in the bike to focus and compose myself and really just attack every corner that I could, squeeze everything I could out of the course,” he said.

Weiss finished the bike two minutes ahead of Allen and three up on Mendez. He then ran steadily to seal the win.

“I really worked hard on bike to stay with Brad Weiss but he was really too strong. And then Mauricio (Mendez) caught me on the run and passed. It wasn’t meant to be for me today,” admitted Allen.

Xterra Czech World Tour Championship Race…

photo 4

9th August Prachatice saw the Xterra Czech World Tour Race and the 7th round of the European Tour. The quality of athletes assembled was world class due to the ITU World Cross Champs in Zittau the following weekend. It’s Ben’s 4th time racing in Czech Republic posting his best result on Czech soil behind Ruben Ruzafa and Josia MIddaugh.

Xterra Czech Ben

The day started with Allen dominating the swim leg and exiting well ahead of his fellow competitors. Allen was then joined with neighbouring country man Kiwi Braden Currie the pair worked together determined to hold off the chasing riders. The bike course is very tough and challenging, Allen and Currie were soon joined by Hass, Ruzafa and Middaugh not holding anything back attacking one another to find each others breaking point. Ruzafa showed his strength on the bike is like no other the group soon cracked under Ruzafas pressure. Allen and Currie were in damage control trying to limit the time loss before heading onto the 10k trail run. Ruzafa entered T1 first with a sizable lead ahead of Middaugh, Allen and Currie. With time between each competitor they all held their own and consolidated their position and the results ended with Ruzafa claiming the title, in 2nd Middaugh and Allen a further 3 minutes back in a solid 3rd spot to round out the podium.

Top 5 Men?Ruben Ruzafa, ESP – 2:40:44?Josiah Middaugh, USA – 2:43:53?Ben Allen, AUS – 2:47:25?Braden Currie, NZL – 2:48:24?Jan Kubicek, CZE – 2:54:06

Quote from Allen
“I’m very happy to be back in the thick of things up front with the big boys really enjoyed the whole experience with credit to Michael Pilousek and the Xterra Czech crew” I would also like to shout out to all round top bloke Alexander Hass who suffered a season ending crash after only coming back in to the sport after a major illness, he’s a great young competitor with a great future and I hope this injury doesn’t detour him from continuing to chase his goals.”

Allen has good form going into next weeks ITU world champs and is looking forward to representing Australia. Look out for all things b&J racing and big congrats to Jacqui Slack for her 2nd place its great to see her find her mojo.
